Singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Brennen Leigh will play The Admiral in Glasgow on Friday, November 7.

With fans such as David Olney and Jim Lauderdale, Brennen’s to-the-point storytelling style has elevated her to new found cult status in Europe, across the United States, South America and most notably in her native Austin, Texas.

Her whip-smart songs have been recorded by the likes of Lee Ann Womack while she has also collaborated with song writing luminaries such as Lauderdale, John Scott Sherrill and Olney.

When not on tour, she splits her time between Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee. Gurf Morlix, no less, produced her latest album, “Before the World Was Made,” a joint effort with Noel McKay.

It has been lauded and praised as “a witty, heartfelt record of dusty barroom shuffles, sassy two-steps and ethereal country-folk, informed by the vintage duets of George Jones and Melba Montgomery, as well as the more modern pairing of John Prine and Iris DeMent.”

Texas-based Sam Baker is brilliant – just ask anyone who’s been at any of his sell-out shows in Scotland of late.

Having played a glorious, headline date in the capital in June this speedy return is most welcome.

Sam’s fourth album, the glorious “Say Grace” has warmed and pleased his fans while his live performances continue to prove memorable and emotional.

Having survived a bomb blast in Peru, eight hours of life saving surgery followed by a series of reconstructive operations, lasting hearing difficulties and learning how to play left-handed because of the injury to his right hand, Sam has a real personal story to tell – and it comes out in his heartfelt lyrics.

An evening in his company is something to savour.

“Sam immersed us in his songs about misfits, desperate souls, the heart-broken with desperate lovers in tow, the dead end jobs, the hopeless romances.” – Mike Ritchie, americana-uk.

Back on the road again is missionaries’ daughter, Rachel Ries.

And one stop she’s scheduled to make is The Admiral in Glasgow on Sunday, November 16.

From South Dakota, by way of Zaire, Rachel is returning from a year-long hiatus, starting with the release of her third album, “Ghost of a Gardener” in February this year. Rachel was in Scotland earlier this year to open up for Aoife O’Donovan at The Pleasance in Edinburgh.

Her voice at times echoes that of Regina Spektor or early Maria Muldaur while her new album is full of thoughtful and inventive arrangements.

Uncut magazine described it in a 7 out of 10 review as “(a) gorgeous gush of warm-blooded harmonies.”
