Californian rocker, Chuck Prophet hits Edinburgh in June this year for a gig The Voodoo Rooms.

He was in majestic form in Glasgow at the tail end of last year, driving his way through latest release, Night Surfer.

The former Green on Red bandsman has been producing records and performing enticing live shows for 20 years with no dip in quality.

Chuck is one exciting performer, all his gigs are moments to savour.

Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin with The Guilty Ones

THE re-united Alvin Brothers – Dave and Phil – are heading to Glasgow for a gig in the newly-refurbished Art School on Tuesday, October 28.

It took a near-death experience to reunite Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin, the California brothers at the heart of “roots heroes” (Rolling Stone) The Blasters.

“Phil died and was brought back to life over in Spain,” Dave says of his brother’s 2012 health scare. “That was a real wakeup call to me. We hadn’t made a full album together since 1985, but as you get older, you realize you’re not immortal and you’ve only got so much time.”

It’s a real coup for promoters, The Fallen Angels Club especially with the brothers’ current album – “Common Ground: Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy” – going down a storm.

This is the Californians’ first collaborative effort in 30 years and their first as brothers as opposed to being members of The Blasters, which Dave quit in 1985 to pursue an illustrious solo career.

The brothers are widely recognised as real mainstays of the roots/rock genre, separately or together – so this gig promises to be something rather special.

The newly refurbished Art School is the perfect venue for this show.

Tickets are priced £17 from Tickets 0141 204 5151 or Book online

Jefferson Hamer & Kristin Andreassen

Saturday 20th September The Admiral Bar

Guitarist and singer Jefferson Hamer, co-recipient of a 2014 BBC2 Folk Award, and songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kristin Andreassen join together to showcase their newest original music after a spectacular year performing at the Newport Folk Festival, Royal Albert Hall, and Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

They first met over a decade ago in Lyons, Colorado, where Kristin and her band Uncle Earl gathered to rehearse material for their award-winning album Waterloo, Tennessee, produced by Led Zep legend John Paul Jones. Jefferson lived next door, and he and Kristin sung country-style duets in the kitchen, finding common ground in traditional music from both sides of the Atlantic.

Kristin’s song writing earned her a feature on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion (with Jefferson as guitarist-in-tow) and her skills as a backing vocalist and instrumentalist were highlighted on recent UK tours with Jeffery Lewis and Aoife O’Donovan.

You can Book online via Ticketweb or give Tickets Scotland a call on 0141 204 5151, or pop into The Admiral Bar and purchase a ticket from behind the bar.

Glasgow Americana Opening Night

Jimmy LaFave & The Night Tribe

Texas songwriter, Jimmy LaFave will bring his ‘red dirt’ music’ to open this year’s Glasgow Americana Festival on Wednesday, October 1.

He will perform with his band at Oran Mor, ensuring Glasgow Americana gets off to a great start.

It’s around 15 years since Jimmy, whose music lies brilliantly somewhere between Dylan and Guthrie, last played a Scottish date.

He effortlessly blends country, blues, folk, and early rock and roll in his own compositions or choice of covers. He has recorded around 15 albums – the last with new material was 2012’s “Depending On the Distance.”

“His bluesy ballads are sung with such depth of feeling that even on a warm sunny day, they give you goose bumps.” – No Depression.

Glasgow Americana takes place between 1st & 5th October and also features, Mary Gauthier, Sturgill Simpson, Adam Holmes & The Embers, Carrie Elkin & Lynne Hanson, Ben Glover, Hazy Recollections Concert, Anthony D’Amato, Matt Andersen & Stephanie Manns.

Chuck Prophet returns to Glasgow with the Mission Express in support of his thirteenth album which is scheduled for release early next year on Yep Roc.

Every year Chuck’s ups the quality stakes on his albums from the amazing ‘Let Freedom Ring’,  to ‘Temple Beautiful’  and his last  album ‘Night Surfer’ they have all seen Chuck at the top of his game.

Where Chuck excels the most is in the live setting with his two hour powerhouse shows pulling tracks from his massive back catalogue and stretching them out with epic guitar solos on tracks like ‘You Did’ or  ‘Castro Halloween’.

Since emerging onto the music scene at age 18 as a member of the seminal rock band Green on Red, Prophet has  collaborated with everyone from  Warren Zevon, Kelly Eillis, Jim Dickinson, Alejandro Escovedo and Lucinda Williams.

Prophet’s music has been featured in films as well as the hit tv shows “True Blood”, “Californication” and “Sons of Anarchy” and most recently been covered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen.

Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express will bring their raucous, glorious and majestic show to Edinburgh on November 19 this year.

His Glasgow gig earlier this year was a terrific example of a crowd- pleasing showman with a top-notch American songbook behind him to deliver big style rock ‘n roll – it was a full-on love in between the frontman/guitarist and a audience who roared their approval throughout.

Tracks from his latest release, Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins, his 13th solo effort since his Green On Red Days, slotted into the set easily and rowdily.

There’s a lot of humour around when Chuck hits the stage with his ace band, and he’s one of those performers who clearly and dearly loves what he does.

“Chuck never fails to deliver a 100 per cent, good-time-for-all type show, so this Edinburgh gig promises to be another great night for all,” said Kevin Morris of The Fallen Angels Club.

The former Green on Red member’s latest CD release, his 12th, “Temple Beautiful” focuses on his life in the San Francisco Bay area and it’s won glowing reviews. The Washington Post wrote: “If this isn’t the best album of Prophet’s career, it’s definitely one of the most invigorating.”

A big guitarist, Prophet is also a revered writer’s writer with the likes of Lucinda Williams and Alejandro Escovedo among his biggest fans. Escovedo’s last three CDs were co-written with Prophet.
