At the tender age of 17 Texan singer-songwriter Sarah Jarosz announced her arrival with the mesmerising debut album Song Up In Her Head. A breathtakingly simple but stunningly accomplished record that struck a balance between tradition and innovation, with a bluegrass and old-timey feel firmly rooted in the 21st century, it earned Jarosz well deserved GRAMMY and American Music Award nominations.

Two years on word is spreading. Hot on the heels of a coveted slot at this year’s Transatlantic Sessions (due for broadcast later in the year), Jarosz is retiring to the UK to promote her follow-up FOLLOW ME DOWN —due out May 16, 2011 on Sugar Hill Records. As with her first album, Jarosz co-produced Follow Me Down with Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, John Prine, Chris Thile) in between sold-out tours and a hectic college schedule. It features guest appearances by Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and Shawn Colvin, and one imagines half of Nashville will be queueing up to work with this young woman in the coming years.

It’s a remarkable feat of song writing. From the old-timey “Annabelle Lee” – an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s final poem – to the Radiohead-inspired My Muse, Jarosz’s unique voice shines through, and her playing—be it on mandolin, octave mandolin, clawhammer banjo or acoustic guitar— gets better with ever listen.
